Since July at the King City Classic in Ohio, has attended every single one of Nick Johnson’s games and last night was no different. Johnson and his Pilots beat the Stoneridge Panthers 107-64. Johnson led the scoring with 30 points on 10 of 16 and 4 of 7 from 3.The Pilots had 5 players in double figures and combined for 29 assists in the win. Findlay’s 4 seniors combined for 73 points.

Nick was his usual self before the game and was putting smiles on the faces of the youngest students at the Henderson International School. The K-8th grade kids absolutely adore their basketball team and it’s unmistakable. It’s a credit to Coach Michael Peck, asst. Coach Todd Simon and the entire Findlay/Henderson International staffs. Its a great underlining to having the #1 high school basketball team in the nation.

Mark Olivier, Oakland Soldiers director, was also in attendance to watch Nick all the way from the Bay.

Johnson wore an Arizona Basketball shirt during warmups (pictured below) and worked on free throws and his range. In 2 games Johnson is averaging 27.5 points with Findlay Prep and there is no denying he is quickly becoming the #1 option. Arizona fans have to like the fact that Johnson is forging that role on the nation’s best team. His summer performance and recent play makes Johnson’s 40th ranking in the class of 2011 by Rivals seem subjectively erroneous. Nick Johnson is a top 20 player. Period.

The NBA lineage has always been noticeable in Nick with his ridiculous vertical leap but now we are seeing an even greater progression. In his first two games opponents are crowding the lane and Nick is positioning himself outside the three point line on the break. In two games Nick is 7 of 11 from three point distance and its forcing and is going to force opponents to play him close. Enter the pump fake. You either get an open shot, a path to the basket or the foul on the way to basket. And after Nick was lighting it up from three last night he decided to use that pump fake, drive to the hoop and show more of that NBA lineage. Players make careers out of a good shot and a pump fake in the NBA. All great players get to the line. It’s an art. Kobe and Pierce are masters of the pump fake because you have to respect their shot. But by then it’s game over.

We have always thought Johnson was a good shooter but if he can become a great shooter then his ceiling is limitless. And that’s what is happening early in his senior season.

PointguardU will be in attendance tonight at Findlay Prep as the Pilots take on the Panthers again. Coach Peck goes for his 100th win in 103 games. We have included some pictures and video clips from last night below. We will have a highlight film of Johnson made after his first 6 games.
