Derrick Williams of the Minnesota Timberwolves catches up with PointGuardU.com and updates fans on his summer.
Kellie Watson: This is Kellie Watson in Venice Beach with PointGuardU.com. Here we have Derrick Williams. Derrick, tell me about your summer.
Derrick Williams: Uh, it’s been great so far, you know, even though this lockout is happening right now. Uh, other than that, you know, just been working out, having fun, and uh, you know, just staying out of trouble.
KW: What are you working on this summer?
DW: You know, just a lot of midrange stuff. You know, knocking down the 15-footer, and, uh, you know, I can shoot the 3 pretty well, you know, I can drive to the basket, but I’m working on my midrange game right now, and just, you know, just trying to do that.
KW: How do you feel about leaving Arizona? Are you still close with the players?
DW: Yeah, I’m close with everybody that goes there. Uh, you know, I’m always checking in on the people that are there right now, you know, Kevin, Solomon, you know, just everybody that came in with me. And, uh, just making sure, you know, what, what they’re doing is good and, uh, everything that they’re doing, uh, you know is right and, uh, just making sure they get to the next level.
KW: What do you think Arizona’s chances are of making it to the Final Four this year?
DW: You know, I think they have a good chance. You know, they have a good team, as long as they play together and, uh, just make sure that they, they all play their role and they’ll be good. And uh, you know, they, they have great players coming in, they have great players that are currently on the team as well. So you know, it’s gonna be a good season for them.
KW: Now how do you feel about going from Arizona, where it’s 100+ degrees, to Minnesota where it’s freezing?
DW: Yeah, it’s gonna be a tough, uh, adjustment. But I’m ready for it, you know, that’s why I made the jump. And I’m ready to just, you know, get out there and play. As long as you play well and, and get a few more wins than they won last season, then I think I’ll be alright.
KW: What’s your relationship like with Ricky Rubio?
DW: Uh, he’s a good player. He’s cool, he’s real cool. Uh, you know, laid back guy just like myself. Uh, don’t’ really talk too much, so. You know, he’s a cool guy. You know, you gotta get cool with the PG if you want him to pass to you, so, you know, it’s, it’s a good thing that he, he’s on our team.
KW: Now you got to play with some big players this summer, like Kobe Bryant. How was that?
DW: It was good. Kobe is one of the best players to ever play this game so, you know, it’s getting out there, and working out with him, and, and just seeing what he does, you know, each and every day is a good thing for me. It’s a learning experience and, uh, you know, you can always learn from somebody that’s, you know, that’s one of the top, you know, 20 best players to ever play this game.
KW: Well thank you very much. This is Kellie Watson with PointGuardU.com.
