One of Arizona’s biggest priorities in the class of 2017 is at the point guard position. Players will emerge and rise but as of right now one of the main targets is 2017 point guard Alex Barcello out of Tempe, AZ. The home grown four-star talent has caught the eye of the Arizona staff and PGU caught up with Barcello to talk about his recruitment.
One of the reasons Barcello has offers from big time programs across the country is his eagerness to play defense, toughness and ability to distribute the basketball.
“I feel most comfortable coming off screens and getting guys open looks. If my shot isn’t there, if I can’t drive or come off the screen and hit an open shot then I’m going to drive and get my teammates open layups, open short corner shots, midrange shots or kick out for open threes. So I’m just trying to make myself and my teammates around me better,” Barcello told PGU.
The Arizona product is known for his tough defense, with defensive minded schools like Arizona and Virginia vying for his services.
“I give 100% on the defensive end every game. I’m the guy that likes to play up in them and play tough,” he said.
“The refs were calling hand checks and I had three early fouls in this game so I had to back off a little but still played hard. I just try to set the tempo for my teammates so if I’m playing hard on defense they will too,” he added.
And as far as where he sees his defensive prowess transitioning to the next level Barcello told PGU, “I think I can guard one and two. Whoever the coaches want me to guard I just know that I’m going to give it my all.”
PGU also caught up with the point guard to talk about where he stands with his recruitment as well.
“I’m open right now but I’m just looking for the best fit. There are definitely schools that are on me hard like Arizona, Virginia, Oregon and Utah. They all keep in contact with me a lot so I’m just looking to see who likes me the most and who needs me,” he said.
When asked about Arizona Barcello replied, “When they would play I would watch them. I just love watching ball. I know about them and I watch them especially with them being so close to home.”
“Sean Miller and Mark Phelps are in touch,” he added. “They just love how I play and they think Arizona is a good fit for me. They know that my ultimate goal is to play in the NBA so they want to help me improve and get to my ultimate goal.”
Having already taken an unofficial to Arizona and been to a few games prior Barcello had rave reviews.
“It’s a packed house every night. I’ve been to there a couple times and the crowd is live. It’s packed and they’re screaming and shouting. Their student section is nuts and it’s just a great environment,” he said.
