It’s that time of year when Tucson is buzzing with talk of college basketball. The Wildcats are nearly ready to hit the court, and addressed the media in the annual basketball media day.
Senior Gabe York was one of many players stepping into a new leadership role.
“I’ve been here for three years now and I’ve been through three hundred plus practices. I know how it works and I know the right way and the wrong way to do it,” York said.
Head coach Sean Miller also mentioned that senior Kaleb Tarczewski’s experience would come in handy as one of the team’s new leaders. Tarczewski played for Team USA this summer in the Pan-American games, playing against some of the best players in North, South, and Central America.
“On the court, for him to be a part of Team USA this summer, win a medal and then have the opportunity to be the all time winningest player in the history of this school, Gabe and him, is one heck of a thing,” Miller said.
Miller also mentioned that the freshmen class has been working hard to make an impact on the coming season.
“They love the game, they’re in the gym, they’re willing to learn and I think they’ve really leaned on those older players to show them the way,” Miller said.
“It’s as easy to coach of a group that I’ve been around,” Miller added. “You don’t have to apologize for trying to make them better.”
Among the most notable differences from last year was sophomore point guard Parker Jackson-Cartwright’s physical transformation. As a slender freshman, Jackson-Cartwright said he put on 20 pounds since last year.
“That’s incredible for me,” Jackson-Cartwright said, “because I don’t think I gained one pound in high school. Bringing my body fat down so I can be in the best shape I can be has helped me.”
Miller echoed the sentiment that added muscle will help Jackson-Cartwright’s game flourish.
“It’s amazing what 10-15 pounds of good weight means to somebody like him,” Miller said. “I believe that everything he did well, he does better.”
Newcomer Ryan Anderson mentioned that this year’s edition of the Wildcats may be different than recent teams.
“Last year a guy like Stanley Johnson, everybody wants to know about Stanley Johnson. We don’t necessarily have that guy but we have a lot of really talented guys,” Anderson said.
