After a good sophomore season Syndric Steptoe went into last season as our number one option at WR. He had a very productive season, but did even more damage on punt and kick returns. He is only 5'9" but is extreemly built. Which by the way will be a running theme throughout all of these positions. Our strenghth and conditioning program has to be at an all time high. Being as short as he is, it is a good thing that he is fast and agile. The christmas present from last season had to be "Money" Mike Thomas. He came in as a 5'8" under the radar 3* recruit. He turned out to be the co-Pac-10 freshman of the year. He crushed all the old wildcat freshman records. 52 reception and 5 TD's. This guy is also a burner and a surprisingly good route runner. If you get a chance to catch a replay of the USC vs. UofA game (being showed quite frequently on FoxSportsPacific) there is a play where he makes the USC cornerback look like a popwarner player. The play ended up in a 40 TD pass. The bad news is, if you haven't noticed it already, is that our two best WR's are 5'8" and 5'9". The #3 guy from last year is Anthony Johnson. Coming in at a gigantic (relatively speaking) 6'2" 200lbs. He is not the fastest WR by any means. Although he may show some signs of briliance, others times he just leaves you scratching your head. If he could be more consistant, then we'd all be able to rest easier knowing that we have us a nice position receiver. Bobby McCoy was a bigger track star for the university then he was a WR. After quiting track to soley focus on football he had a lot of us excited about what he could bring to the table. he has recently showed up to practice with a boot on one foot and the word is a torn ligament in his ankle. He is expected to be out about two months. B.J. Dannard played offense, defense and special teams for us the last two years. This year he may break out becuase we will no longer use him on defense so that he can focus on being a WR only. He will most likely still return kicks along side Steptoe. The incoming freshmen may be what excites me the most. Terrell Reese, DeLaShawn Dean, and Terrell Turner are all tall, fast, and can catch. The last time we heard of that in the desert was in the late 90's. Terrell Reese is 6'4" and just broke the Tx high school high jump record. DeLaShawn Dean my be a big steal becuase he was underrecruited due to a ACL injury. He was never able to show what he could do his senior season. Guys that have been watching the 7on7 workouts say that Terrell Turner catches absolutely everything in sight. I expect the top one of the 3 to play while the other two redshirt. As good as this group is, with all the young talent we are only getting better in the next couple years.
