Guilmet throws 4th complete game of season as Wildcats top Trojans
By Ryan Finley
Arizona Daily Star
Preston Guilmet pitched nine stellar innings against USC on Saturday night, earning his 10th win of the season and setting the tone in a pivotal Pac-10 Conference series.
Here's how Guilmet celebrated:
The Wildcats' ace signed some autographs, tossed a ball to a little girl, ran along the warning track, did some interviews and when that was over ran some more, did stomach crunches, stretched his arm out and packed on ice.
He left Kindall/Sancet Stadium sprinting, just as the house lights went off.
Such is the routine for Guilmet, who continued to build his impressive legacy with a 5-2 win over USC. The right-hander allowed nine hits, struck out nine and walked just one for his fourth complete game of the season.
"He's special from a talent standpoint. From a makeup standpoint, he's really, really, really good," UA coach Andy Lopez said. "He's just a really competitive kid who knows what he's doing in all situations."
And yet Guilmet who is 10-1 with a 1.70 ERA and 119 strikeouts this season said he keeps it simple.
"You roll out, and you roll up lots of zeros," he said, without a hint of irony. "Get another win."
Guilmet's performance made Saturday night easy for the Wildcats' offense, which put up three runs in the second inning and cruised the rest of the way.
T.J. Steele started the rally with a one-out walk, stole second base and scored when Jon Gaston laced a single to right field. After Dwight Childs struck out, Robert Abel the Cats' No. 9 hitter ripped an RBI double to make it 2-0. Diallo Fon capped the scoring with a single to left field.
The quick rally was all Arizona (36-11,11-5 Pac-10) needed.
"Preston carried us on his back," Lopez said.
Meanwhile, the Trojans (23-23, 6-10) ran themselves out of their few scoring opportunities.
USC scored its first run when Robert Estrella ripped a two-out single to right field with two outs in the seventh inning. Lucas Duda scored easily, but Robert Stock running behind him from second was thrown out at home.
An inning later, the Trojans' Grant Green was thrown out at second as he tried to turn a single into a double.
