Since 1989, these Arizona players have been selected in the top four picks of the NBA Draft: Sean Elliott, Mike Bibby, and Derrick Williams.
You can add Aaron Gordon to that list.
With the 4th pick, in what many viewed as the biggest surprise of the draft, the Orlando Magic selected Gordon to go alongside last year’s lottery pick and former Indiana Hoosier Victor Oladipo.
Gordon said he was notified of Orlando’s intention to pick him five minutes before the selection, getting a call from agent Calvin Andrews.
Orlando’s young roster leaves a lot of room for improvement, and Gordon will have a chance to contribute from day one. He will likely compete for playing time with a trio of forwards: incumbent starter Tobias Harris, Maurice Harkless, and Andrew Nicholson. Gordon has potential to be better than all of them, and could slide into the starting power forward role immediately if the Orlando front office is intent on developing him.
There’s also the possibility that Gordon will play small forward for the Magic, who earlier today traded veteran swingman Aaron Afflalo to the Denver Nuggets. With a gaping hole at the 3, Gordon could potentially start as a small forward too.
However the Magic roster shakes out, it’s clear that there’s ample opportunity for Gordon to play at both forward spots. And with Oladipo, he forms one of the most athletic and defensively imposing young guard/forward tandems in the NBA.
