Sean Miller and the Arizona coaching staff has never thought twice about taking a player from the state of Arizona and with Wildcat house hold names like Sean Elliot, Mike Bibby and Richard Jefferson there has been success throughout the history of the program. Just those three names are enough for an Arizona born player to understand what those players did on the next level, especially while attending the University of Arizona. A player that could be next in line to step into that spotlight is 2017 PG Markus Howard.
PGU caught up with the highly touted player to see what he thinks about his game, experiences with team USA and where Arizona stands in his recruitment.
“It was great to have that ‘USA’ across my chest,” he said.
The 16U team destroyed their competition but Howard was able to benefit greatly from the atmosphere.
“I wanted to work on keeping my speed and my crossover. Just continuing to stay consistent on defense,” he said.
But what Howard, in the end, really took away from the gold medal experience is the exposure that came with it. Being able to represent the country gave Howard a chance to play with and against some of the world’s best players.
During the trip Howard shot an amazing 48.4% from three-point range (15/31) and understands that is a strong point of his game which is what makes him such an offensive threat.
Since opening up his recruitment Howard has seen his stock soar and his offer list is growing. With Baylor, Arizona, Indiana, Memphis and Arizona State as some of the schools that are in the mix Howard had some things that he is looking for when narrowing down his schools to make a decision.
“Just my relationship with the coach, if I would be able to play right away and the school being predominantly a basketball school,” he said.
If Howard is looking for a basketball school he doesn’t have to look very far. With schools extending offers there has been one new coach hot on his trail.
“Coach Phelps, he’s a great guy and he knows a lot about the game,” he said. Coach Phelps is the newest addition to the Arizona coaching staff and the fruits of that labor seem to be paying dividends for Miller, as Howard is a top recruit for Miller and company.
When asked if Arizona will make the “cut” of his list of visits the point guard replied, “most definitely.” With more to come from the 2017 prospect look for Markus Howard to continue to rise as a highly sought after target.
