Current Arizona big men consist of seniors Kaleb Tarczewski, Ryan Anderson and Mark Tollefsen, sophomore to-be in Dusan Ristic and current freshmen Chance Comanche. After the 2015-16 season the coaching staff will prioritize a post presence to solidify the roster with Ristic and Comanche moving forward.
A player that the staff has in mind for the 2017 class is big man Brandon McCoy out of San Diego, CA. One of the high risers when the new class rankings came out has been vaulted into the top 10 with plenty more to show as his game continues to impress especially with the new environment around him.
“I transferred to Cathedral Catholic this year. I just really wanted to be somewhere where academics is really important,” he told PGU. “It’s just been a lot different than where I was at before but I like it a lot.”
Since the summer recruiting period ended and started up again it was almost as if the break had no difference on McCoy. “Coaches come by our practices all of the time so I’ve been in contact with them a lot.”
“I am really focusing on trying to get better every day, at everything I do. Balance is still really big for me. When I keep my legs under me I notice that I can do a lot more with the ball so I really put a lot of emphasis on that.”
When the Arizona staff first began to recruit the seven-foot center the potential was all over the San Diego native and now the newly minted five-star can see his hard work paying off. “Honestly it doesn’t even matter. Right now I just want to do what it takes to be the best.”
Hard work is something that is not new to the high-level prospect as his dedication has the potential to take him to heights he never thought he would reach. “To this day I believe that everybody else can have the spotlight now but I just want to play and show that I belong so when my time comes ill be ready for all of that.”
McCoy is no stranger to competition as he has played against some of the higher profile players in the country and always leaves coaches drooling about what he is and could be and Arizona is making it known that he is a priority for them.
“I know. They win a whole lot and they really just care about their players. When I start narrowing my schools down that’s something that’s definitely going to play a factor.”
McCoy has plans to visit Tucson soon.
“I just went to Michigan State a few weeks ago so ill take a trip to Arizona really soon. I just want to see what they have to offer to get a feel for the program.”
