Every so often there is a player within the state of Arizona that fits the mold as “Arizona good.” That player is 2017 point guard Alex Barcello of Tempe, AZ. The 6’2 lead guard is looking to cap off his strong summer performance by impressing the Arizona coaching staff and PGU caught up with Barcello to discuss how things are shaping up.
“I’ve tried to improve my leadership skills, communication on the floor and getting guys where they need to be and when they need to be there. My strength has improved since last year especially getting to the rim I know a lot of people were saying that I am just a jump shooter but I’m getting to the rim and distributing. If my shot isn’t falling I’m definitely looking for my teammates,” he tells PGU.
What stands out about Barcello’s game is toughness out on the court. His teammates follow him and feed off of his energy and the 4-star guard discussed this with PGU. “I try to pick up full court on defense every time. Keep pressure on the ball and that gets our energy level and helps us play better as a team if we’re playing with a lot of energy we can get the win against anyone and that’s why we’re here.”
You could compare his approach to that of former Wildcat TJ McConnell in that he is an intense player on the court who loves to compete. However, the big difference lies within his offensive skill set. Barcello can drive to the basket and his jump shot is almost automatic at this point with range to extend the defense.
“The big thing is having my teammates trust me. If I can keep getting my teammates the ball and keep them involved they’ll follow me,” he explained.
As he enters his senior year a decision is looming in the near future and was further discussed. “Everything has been great. I’m in contact with a lot of great schools and coaching staffs and I’m looking for the best fit wherever that may be across the country. Some new schools have came in but I want to go somewhere where I can develop into the player I want to become and get to the level I want to play at.”
“Arizona is definitely on me hard right now. I talk to coach Miller almost daily and we’re in constant contact. It’s a great school and a great option to have but ill take a look at everything and decide on the best fit for me so I’m open right now.”
Sean Miller and the Arizona staff made their presence known attending every one of Barcello’s games during the week with the hopes of having a seat at the table for the talented point guard.
“I’ll narrow my list down after the July period and cut my list to 5 or 6 schools and ill go from there. “
