2016 Zach Collins out of Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, Nevada is a skilled post player. PGU spoke with Zach and his father Mike, who gave us a unique chance to get to know the 6-10 big guy they call Z-Bo.
Collins, who recently picked up an offer from Arizona, is currently playing AAU ball for Dream Vision 16U where he has gotten off to a sensational start in his first five tournaments averaging 18 points, 16 boards, 5 blocks and 4 assists per game.
Collins plays high school ball for Bishop Gorman with fellow big men and 2015 Arizona targets Stephen Zimmerman and Chase Jeter in an insanely loaded frontcourt.
PGU: How much does it help to play with guys like Stephen Zimmerman and Chase Jeter everyday?
“It’s unique and very advantageous to have such extreme talent on one team. It can be tough at times having to play behind them, but it will certainly pay off in the long run and he’s learning a lot from them and improving by practicing against and playing with them.”
PGU: Describe his game for us.
“He’s extremely physical, he can play the 4 or 5, enjoys contact, goes after it and has a jumper that extends to about 20-22 feet out.”
PGU: What does he need to improve on the most?
“Developing and growing into his body. He has the fundamentals down and a very strong basketball IQ, but he’s still coming into his body since he’s still so young (16).”
PGU: What has recruiting been like?
“It’s been crazy. We’ve been getting a lot of calls and offers lately.”
PGU: Is there a certain NBA player that he models his game after or compares himself to?
“Kevin Love for sure. We watch a lot of NBA basketball and he tries to pick up as much as he can from Love with a little bit of Tim Duncan’s mid range game.”
PGU: What’s your relationship with Arizona like?
“It’s really good. We’ve spoken to Miller and Book a few times. We really trust them and liked how straight forward they were with us.”
Collins has an unofficial visit to Arizona scheduled in June.
